Jackson Heights Event ‘Amplifies’ Voices of Women Running For Office

Death and Injury Persist On Queens’ Most Dangerous Streets

Despite the many successes of the New York City’s Vision Zero initiative, preventable deaths and injuries continue to plague Queens’ streets.

A few in particular stand out.

At least 32 have been injured or killed on Northern Boulevard and 22 more have been injured or killed on Jamaica Avenue, according to city data on traffic accidents.

Noisy LGA Routes May Actually Lower Life Expectancy

Residents of northeast Queens just found out that the noisy planes they have complained about for years aren’t just affecting their quality of life — they may also limit their life expectancy, according to a new study.

Researchers from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health examined the impact of noise on health as well as the economic benefits of more efficient plane routes. They found that prolonged exposure to loud sounds could increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and anxiety and trim a whole year off a person’s life. They published their report, which used routes out of LaGuardia Airport as a case study, on Aug. 15.

LaGuardia Road Flyover Facilitates Easier Access, Gov Says

LaGuardia Airport is soaring into the future, at least according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

On Tuesday, Cuomo visited Queens to unveil a new overpass to the airport that he said will relieve congestion and facilitate easier access for travelers.

The “flyover” — a road extension that rises above Grand Central Parkway at eastbound Exit 7 — is part of the ongoing $8 billion LaGuardia modernization project, which includes untangling the confusing thoroughfares that lead to the airport.
