Jackson Heights Event ‘Amplifies’ Voices of Women Running For Office

With just a few left before Thursday’s primary election, women candidates from Queens joined more than 100 supporters at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights Sunday to demonstrate their support for progressive women running for office.

The event was hosted by Amplify Her, an organization created to address women’s underrepresentation in the New York City’s elected offices.

Death and Injury Persist On Queens’ Most Dangerous Streets

Despite the many successes of the New York City’s Vision Zero initiative, preventable deaths and injuries continue to plague Queens’ streets.

A few in particular stand out.

At least 32 have been injured or killed on Northern Boulevard and 22 more have been injured or killed on Jamaica Avenue, according to city data on traffic accidents.

Unions Take a Hit — With Help From A Queens Weed Dispensary

A Queens medical marijuana dispensary is sweetening the pot for current and former union members.

Vireo Health of New York, the first medical marijuana dispensary to open in Queens, will extend discounts to more than 2.5 million members and retirees of Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW.

Starting on Labor Day, qualifying union members past and present will get $25 off their first purchase and a 10 percent discount on each subsequent purchase from any of Vireo’s four dispensaries — including the shop located on Queens Boulevard next to the Queens Center mall in Elmhurst.

Gasless Tenants Take Landlord to Queens Housing Court

On Friday, the Legal Aid Society announced that it had filed a lawsuit in Queens Housing Court on behalf of 45 tenants of Regent Apartments in Elmhurst who have gone without gas since January.

Legal Aid filed the action Regent Equities LLC, New York City Department of Buildings Department of Housing Preservation and Development to compel the restoration of gas for cooking in the apartment complex.
