Community Board Term Limits On the Ballot This November

After months of public hearings and feedback, the Mayoral Charter Revision Commission voted to put three questions on the November ballot that have big implications for city government, especially at the local community board level.

One ballot question asks voters whether they support the establishment of term limits on community board members — an issue that has encountered pushback from community boards themselves.

The commission said community board term-limits can help ensure that the boards reflect the changing demographics of the districts they serve.

Judge Halts Deportation of Maspeth Taxi Driver, Father of 2

A federal judge issued a stay of deportation for Edisson Barros, a Maspeth taxi driver and father of two, just hours before he was scheduled to be deported, according to Telemundo and attorneys from Legal Aid.

Edisson Barros, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador, was detained inside Hudson Correctional Facility in Kearny, NJ and was first scheduled to be deported more than a week ago, but he was instead transferred to a jail in Louisiana to await the final decision.

With her father facing imminent deportation, Maspeth resident Eileen Barros joined family members, demonstrators and Council Member Francisco Moya at City Hall to demand his release.

Edisson Barros, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador, was detained inside Hudson Correctional Facility in Kearny, NJ and was scheduled to be deported Friday. The father of two lived in Queens for 25 years and worked as a taxi driver until he was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in July.

Those are just three examples of elder abuse, fraud and predation that have made their way to Queens County Criminal Court in recent weeks. They are reflective of a larger problem, says Julie Stoil Fernandez, the co-chair of the Elder Abuse Committee of the New York State Bar Association. Fernandez told the Queens Daily Eagle that predatory behaviors and outright scams are getting worse and more common as the borough’s population ages.

Maspeth’s Thieving Trio Scammed Queens Seniors

The three thieves pretended to be grandchildren, they said they were old neighbors, they even recruited children to assist in their schemes — anything to get inside senior citizens’ home and steal their stuff.

Now the trio of Maspeth schemers are headed to prison for up to 10 years, having been sentenced yesterday in Queens Criminal Court. The three thieves targeted senior homeowners in Jackson Heights, Flushing and Maspeth in the summer of 2016, said Queens County District Attorney Richard A. Brown said.
